st. patty's

It's the day to wear green and if I owned anything green, I may have thought about wearing it. Instead, I rushed off to school today in greys. It's not that I'm anti-St.Patrick's or anything, I just don't see the point in wearing it to school since I'll be working a promotion tonight at an Irish pub in the middle of St. Patrick's Day madness. I'll be over at the Irish Rose, handing out samples of Jameson Irish Whiskey from 10-12am, so come visit if you'd like.

Although I'm not sure how I feel about having such a last night on a weekday, I will enjoy the perks of being able to party (sorta..or at least people watch) and get paid to do so.

I'll try to get some pictures going on this thing.

New Idea

I came to the conclusion that what this blog is lacking is a sense of direction and focus. I decided that I'm going to give my lame "but I'm really not a blogger" status an immediate makeover and establish myself as a "popular" blogger. Oh don't you worry, you kids are all going to look up to me, or laugh at me. Either way, you'll find my mediocre life so interesting that it's inevitable that you'll need to want more from me.

...Moving on, what I actually wanted to announce is my "new direction." My idea came to me with the help of my friend, Jace. We were invited to a friend's birthday dinner at P.F. Chang's and we had a serious problem: my budget = $20, Jace's = $17. The smart thing to do was of course, combine forces and rule the world and so we did. Long story short, we ordered the following:
-Stella Artois...$6
-Plum Wine...$4.50
-Mongolian Beef...$17
-2 orders brown rice...complementary
- gratuity...$4

As you could see, alcoholic beverages were a necessity and we took that into careful consideration before we decided to order the main dish. Other choices included the Shrimp and Candied Walnuts ($17.50), the Chicken Lettuce Wraps ($9), or the Crispy Honey Shrimp ($13...?). Anyway, we ended up spending $33 with our $37 limit. We were hooked and decided that budget spending was the way to go. I mean, really though, spending $16 on dinner at a glorified Chinese-American restaurant is almost a miracle. It was my first time dining at the Ward location but I had known and expected the price range to be higher than your average Panda Express. The place was also very Asian chic with an Modern twist on classic art, so I guess you could say we were paying for the dining experience. To be fair, the waiter was exceptionally great, the Mongolian beef was addicting and the food came relatively quickly, even for a random Monday night. Although I enjoyed the dinner, I personally love the taste of Dim Sum from the heart of China Town.

But I digress. My true point is that I am a complete failure when it comes to tracking my personal spending (put it this way, I'm used to seeing overdraft notices and I still don't trust myself with a credit card). I figured recording my personal spending in full public view would be a perfect incentive to keep myself from going out of control and simultaneously whipping my pathetic financial state into shape.

Currently, I am interning at a visitor's publication company. As much as I love working there, my internship is especially taxing, since I'm trying to graduate by May with a heavy work load on top of everything else. Hence, I have no time to maintain a steady job. My side job is working as a spokesmodel but the jobs are neither steady, nor are the payments given regularly. I have also been working for a particular retail company for the past 3, almost 4 years, however with combination of economic downfall and meager personal availability, my role in the company has been reduced to "visual's team," appearing once a month in the middle of the night like a mythical creature who changes the mannequins' outfits and rearranges the window displays. If I didn't live at home with my parents, my 23 year old butt would be in a very bad place. Even so, I manage to spend the seriously low income at an alarmingly fast rate because I eat, drive and sometimes pay my phone bill (usually end up asking my mother for help). I also go out every so often for special occasions such at birthday dinners and when I get a bit more money, I also have a bad habit of wanting to go out and buy new clothes or shoes.

Scary? I know, it looks even worse in writing, but if I'm going to make a public confession, then I should be honest. Recently, I've been proactive in my search for (legal) money-making opportunities. However, my ultimate goal is to show everyone that it's possible to still have a life on a realllllllllllly low budget. As kooky and cliché as it may sound, it's nice to rediscover the simple things in life and appreciate the company of friends and family no matter when or where. Hopefully, I can inspire others to do the same. Wish me luck, I'm going to need it.
